Tuesday’s Twitter Tip

by Ashley Drake Gephart

Here is a question @davepool asked on Twitter…

Yes, what is up with these people on twitter with over 1,000 followers and following just as many back but only 2 tweets? How is that possible? How do you organically build a large following base with only two tweets unless you’re a celebrity?

There are many services out there that you can join where everyone mutually follows everyone else. Some of these services are free, and some charge a fee. TweepMe is one such service.

While I don’t recommend them for your average Twitter user looking to develop one-on-one relationships, they can be helpful if you’re trying to initially build a new business following quickly.

    Ashley,

That’s not the only way this happens. Many people also auto-follow those who follow them. Hence, one easy way to get a lot of followers is to follow a bunch of people who auto-follow back. There are even strategies for figuring out who auto-follows.

Over time, I think that this strategy won’t work very well, but right now, at the “Wild West” stage of social media, it will bump the numbers on sites like Twitter. What that turns in to over time has yet to be seen. Hang on to your hat!
