What Makes Someone a Social Media Expert?

by Ashley Drake Gephart

What makes someone a social media expert? This is a common question—just replace “expert” with your word of choice.

Social Media is a new way of marketing a brand, cause, or person. There is nothing new about marketing; social media is just using new tools.

So then, what makes someone an “expert”? The same thing that makes someone an expert in marketing or public relations.

Bringing awareness to a cause–Charity: Water.

Changing the way the public sees your brand–Comcast.

Increasing sales–Dell.

social media definedSocial media is also about listening and meeting the needs of the community. Traditional marketing is a one-way dialouge. You talk and they listen, hopefully. With social media, you talk, they listen and respond back. The circle continues as you build real relationships with your clients, customers, employees, and community. Pretty social, isn’t it?

Social media “experts” are using a new media to promote. Instead of tv, print, and radio, our tools are twitter, facebook, youtube, flickr, blogging, and more.

Social media also creates a level of transparency that hasn’t been seen since the days of small communties when word-of-mouth could make or break a business!
