I spoke with Investigative Reporter Jeremy Jojola of KOB-4 about Chat Roulette and Internet safety…
As someone who has been around since the days of BBS’ing, nothing shocks me when it comes to the Internet. I’m well aware of what kind of sites are out there. As a mother, it’s not a matter of shielding my teenage daughter from life. She’s on Twitter, Facebook, and other sites. It’s a matter of protecting my daughter from naked men and women!
I agree with those who say there are numerous other sites that have porn but, as my daughter points out, Chatroulette.com sounds like a nice site. Many porn sites are very clear that they are porn. How many parents would say, “Sure, you can visit Bang Bros., but Chat Roulette really doesn’t sound bad.” Heck, even just reading the Google blurb for Chat Roulette sounds fine.
I hate to say it, but many parents are clueless and sometimes it takes a village. If some villagers have to “thunk” some parents over the head, then so be it. Some have to be told about “Net Nanny” or other types of software to block sites.
Will kids get access to porn if they want to? Sure. But as parents, we don’t need to toss them the latest issue of Playboy/Playgirl and tell them to have at it.
Finally, some argue that this topic really isn’t news. I don’t care. Not to sound trite, but if this “news” story prevents one child from being preyed upon, then it was a great news story!
Please visit KOB.com for the news story. Special thanks to Jeremy Jojola.
