Twitter: Quality, not Quantity

by Karl Gephart

twitter artsy logoWarren Whitlock (@warrenwhitlock) recently wrote a great piece called “Did I mention that Twitter is not about getting a lot of followers?”. In it, he hits so well on the central theme of social media that I see so many businesses miss, time and time again—the principal of quality, not quantity, through direct engagement with people.

“Talk to people. Build relationships,” he says. Indeed, twitter is a 2-way street of communication. It’s not a classified board for ads. It’s about fostering friendships and trust–”SOCIAL media!”

Sometimes your mutual followers (“friends”) don’t respond to you directly. They’re engaging with you in a non-verbal way. As Michael Q. Todd (@mqtodd) puts it, “There are, however, thousands who just watch and never converse. We may be “influencing” them and never know it.” That’s why I use a tool called favstar.fm to see who has favorited my tweets. Many times I’ve seen people favorite my tweets who have never even talked to me!

I've never understood the friends of mine who Tweet or post on FB about how they're about to reach 200 or 500 followers or that they just got that many people. The first thing that crosses my mind is, "Big whooopdiedo!"

I'd never heard of favstar.fm nor did I know I could "favorite" tweets. Thanks for the headsup! :)

Sometimes it seems people are just collecting followers.

favstar.fm is great. It's interesting to see who is favoriting tweets as many of them never chat with me online.
